Why An EMP Attack Will Mean Certain Death For America Part I

Why An EMP Attack Will Mean Certain Death For America Part I

You’re on your lunch break about to get into your car when you hear a foreign sound. You look over your right shoulder thinking it was off in the distance, but something catches your eye. You look up and in the broad days sun you see what looks like a meteor, puffs of white smoke around a red ball streaking the horizon. Right as you pull your camera out to snap a picture you see a bright flash and seconds later you’re slapped in the face by concussion, your phone flashes and goes dead. You’ve just witnessed an Electro Magnetic Pulse attack.

We’ve all heard about an EMP, but what are the odds of it happening in our lifetime? Very good says the Department of Defense. A new study conducted by the military warns that an electromagnetic pulse attack such as those produced by North Korea, Russia, and Iran could collapse the United States and displace millions.  In the study, the Department of Defense says that 90 percent of the US population on the east coast would be dead in a year. Super scary stuff, but why?

Heres how it works:

An EMP Is a electromagnetic pulse, and is distributed in pulses by a nuclear explosion. The result is a quickly changing electric field that will disrupt and destroy electronic devices across the US. The intense radiation can also cause a secondary EMP burst by charging and ionizing the surrounding air.

A high-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) weapon is a NEMP warhead designed to be detonated far above the Earth's surface. The explosion releases a blast containing gamma rays, this ionizes as a secondary effect and the resultant energetic free electrons interact with the Earth's magnetic field to produce a much stronger EMP than at lower altitudes.

So what would it disrupt?

Everything electronic that contains micro-processors or electronics. For example: everything plugged in, most vehicles made after 1990, all electronic communications like your cell phone, internet, and cable systems. Air planes, and all public transportation. All infrastructure, hospitals, police/fire, even with generators, all electronics would be fried.

What wouldn’t be effected: Vehicles made before 1990, ATV’s, UTV’s, and motorcycles that are mechanical. Batteries and Solar Panel (although the electronic tenders and controllers would be fried solar cells and batteries would be ok.) Older electronic devices that use vacuum tubes as long as they aren’t plugged in. All banking, ATMs, online banking services, and money would be frozen.

The picture is a grim one. The US population isn’t prepared to deal with this type of attack nor does it have a plan to survive. Chaos would ensue and people fighting for resources would put our country at war with one another. So what can you do? Part II to be continued…

Question. Can an EMP destroy quartz analog and digital watch? I’m talking about watches that does not carry any solar or small computer chip that can connects to phones and computers inside of them. What about mechanical watches? Can those survive an EMP strike? What about red dot sights such as ACOG, EOTECH, etc….?

Mike your always bringing up great topics of discussion. I have read the “One Second After” series of books and they are a great set of books to read about survival and preparedness. I try to get collect and read as many of those type books as I can. I’m always hollering at you guys when your streaming live on Instagram as " roninb20". Keep up the great content fellas!

“One Second After” written by William R. Fortschen takes a very realist approach to this exact situation. It follows a town through an entire year after an EMP takes out the power grid in the USA. Great story, and filled with scenarios that you might not have thought of. I highly recommend it.

There is very much uncertainty about what kind of effects an EMP would have and largely depend on the distance and strength of the EMP weapon. It could temporarily disable computers/cars/systems, but they would start right back up after a short time. Or it could be strong enough to permanently alter any stored data – including firmware embedded in most all electronics. Regardless, the preparations you would make for a worst case EMP would be sufficient for just about any manmade or natural disaster, the same way preparing for the Zombie apocalypse (though extremely unlikely) would help you survive an earthquake, fire, job loss, or other much more probable emergency.

Re: Books on the topic:
Ted Koppel wrote a very well researched book about what would happen in the US if the power grid went down, which would be the most severe impact of a powerful EMP (but could also be caused by a remote cyberattack or targeted direct action). It’s called Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath.

John Matherson wrote a great fiction series that starts with an EMP attack. The books are One Second After/One Year After/The Final Day.

I believe as my Dad does. He’s 93, WWII Veteran, God Bless him, and still fighting for our Country, in his own way. He has been published three times. The fourth time he was turned down, due to controversial nongovernmental issues.

Growing up he built a place second home for us all in Vermont. Very remote, set back in the woods and in the winter only snowmobile access or hike.

He taught us how to shoot, dress a deer or whatever and to just survive. No frills until we came off the moutain, so to speak.

I hear everything that your saying and it’s so true.

We have become a complacent society. Everybody is out for themselves. It’s taken for granted. What ever happened to help they neighbor?

A friend of mine years ago turned both his diesel engine cars to run with recycled restaurant fat. If you got by the smell you got it licked, as they say. Car always smelled like French fries.

Michael, kudos for bringing this all back to the surface.

The Pods have been informative, educational and soul searchingly rejuvenating.

So Happy New Year to you, your family and Fieldcraft Survival.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

I will be shooting again this year. And Keto starts tomorrow. YOOZA!

Thanks again for what you done for our country and continue to do.
