This one-day land navigation class (0900 to 1700) will teach you the skills you need to travel through the wilderness with a map and compass. This course will teach you fundamentals from multiple perspectives. You will learn the necessary skills to determine location, identify direction, measure distance, and ultimately create plotted routes. This class is 75 percent classroom and 25 percent field exercises to proof what is learned.

No prior experience is needed and kids over 16 are welcome.

Topics Covered +

• Map reading
• Determining position with UTM and MGRS coordinates
• Measuring distance through multiple methods
• Establishing pace count for mile and kilometer measurements
• Taking a bearing, walking a bearing, and other compass directional functions
• Offset shooting, resection, doglegging, and boxing an obstacle
• Creating route cards with descriptions of terrain
• Intro to celestial navigation, GPS, and online mapping software

Required Gear +

• Notebook, Pen, and Mechanical Pencils
• Lunch/snacks/water for the day
• Suunto MC2D, Suunto MC2G or M3 Compass (or equivalent baseplate compass)
• Optional Equipment: 1:24,000 Pocket UTM Protractor and 1:24,000 ruler

Loaner compasses and tools are available, but it is better to learn on your own. We encourage you to purchase a quality USGS or MyTOPO map of your area or home town to learn from. Instructor (Kevin Estela) will provide training maps the day of the course.
