Fieldcraft Survival Basic Shotgun

In this hands-on, introductory course, students will learn a shotgun's function, capabilities, and proper handling. Considered “the thinking man’s gun”, the shotgun is incredibly versatile and belongs in everyone’s gun safe. Students will learn multiple ways to properly handle and load their firearm, select ammunition for given scenarios, work through shooting scenarios, and how to utilize their firearm through different shooting positions. Whether you wish to hone your skills or gain confidence as a first-time shotgun user, we welcome all skill levels.

  • Correct ammo selection
  • Continuous fire drills
  • Clearing malfunctions
  • Recoil mitigation
  • Alternative shooting positions
  • One-arm operation
  • Shotgun patterning
  • Slug zeroing
  • Terminal ballistics
  • Moving targets (simulating game animals)

Required Gear:

  • Modern, functioning shotgun in 12, or 20 gauge. (Pump, single-shot, double-barrel, or semi-auto) ie: Remington 870 or Mossberg 590, Mossberg 940 or Beretta 1301 or A300 Patrol.
  • Compatible ammunition
  • Ammunition
  • 20 rounds buckshot (00 or 000)
  • 20 rounds of slugs
  • Minimum 5 Dummy Rounds
  • 125 rounds birdshot (size 8 or 9)
  • Ammunition management systems such as a small belt pouch or deep pockets
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Sling
  • IFAK/BHK w/ tourniquet
  • Comfortable clothing, sturdy close-toed shoes appropriate for the weather and environment
  • Rain/inclement weather clothing
  • Snacks and drinks

Pre-Requisites

There are no pre-requisites or recommended courses to take before Basic Shotgun.  This is an entry level course that will build your skills from the ground up. 

How to get the most out of the course:

This course generally runs 5 hours (0900-1400) but be sure to check the specific course page for detailed schedule in your location as time and length may vary based on specific circumstances.
