Fieldcraft Survival Land Nav 2/Field Experience
This intensive and thorough land navigation course combines both classroom and field training. Day 1 starts in the classroom, going over fundamentals of map and compass use. Day 2 involves the practical application of skills in varied terrain and advanced techniques grounded in realistic needs. Students will gain a strong foundation for this essential skill set through practical repetition of critical skills under the watchful supervision of Fieldcraft Survival Instructors.
Course Overview
Required Equipment:
- Notebook and pen
- Compass (will be provided for use at the class)
- Snacks, water, and lunch
- Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes appropriate for the weather and environment
Pre-Requisites
Land Navigation 1: While not required, it is recommended that you take Land Nav 1 before you take the Field Land Nav Experience

- Pacing exercise and practical assessment
- Taking bearings/back bearings
- Navigation practical
- Boxing an obstacle
- Offset shooting techniques
- Primitive and austere navigation(Shadow Sticks)
- Terrain association in the field
- Creating a navigation card and using it in the field
- Introduction to GPS and internet navigation aids
- Scouting concepts
- Culminating exercise
